LinkedIn is the latest social networking site to bolster its security with two-step verification.
The optional feature will add an extra layer of security to users’ LinkedIn accounts, said LinkedIn director Vincente Silveira.
“Most Internet accounts that become compromised are illegitimately accessed from a new or unknown computer (or device),” Silveira wrote in a blog post. “When enabled, two-step verification makes it more difficult for unauthorized users to access your account, requiring them to have both your password and access to your mobile phone.”
A numeric code will be sent via SMS to the mobile phones of LinkedIn users who sign up for two-step verification.
The numeric code must be entered along with the appropriate password when logging in from an unrecognized device for the first time.
LinkedIn will also send users a notification each time their account is accessed with a new device.
To sign up for two-step verification, users must go to ‘settings,’ choose the ‘account’ tab and click ‘manage security settings.’
Users then must click ‘turn on two-step verification’ and then register and verify their cellphone number.
