One-Third of Americans Now Own A Tablet: Report

According to new data, tablets are becoming increasingly popular among American adults.

About one-third of American’s — or 34 percent — 18 or older own a tablet, says a new study by Pew Internet.

Tablet ownership has nearly doubled in the past year, says the report, and is up more than 30 percent since 2010, when only three percent of Americans said they owned a tablet computer.

College graduates and adults between the ages of 35 and 44 are most likely to own a tablet, with the most popular brands being the Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Google Nexus or Kindle Fire. Fifty-six percent of tablet owners are also in a higher income bracket of $75,000 or more.

While there’s no significant differences in ownership between men and women or members of different races or ethnic groups, data does show that college graduates and parents are more likely to own a tablet.

“For instance, 49 percent of adults with at least a college degree own a tablet, significantly more than those at any other education level,” says the report. “Parents are also more likely than non-parents to own a tablet: Half (50 percent) of parents with minor children living at home own a tablet computer, compared with 27 percent of non-parents.”

As well, of these people, 37 percent live in a suburban area while 27 percent live in a rural location, and only 17 percent of people who didn’t graduate from high school own a tablet.

Interestingly, while Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 were equally as likely to own a tablet as adults between the ages of 30 to 49 in 2012, the older demographic has pulled ahead and are now “significantly” more likely to own one.
