EU Reportedly Probing Apple’s Sales Strategy

The European Commission is looking into Apple’s sales tactics after receiving complaints from wireless carriers that the agreements pushed by the iPad maker stifle competition.

According to the Financial Times, the Commission has sent nine-page questionnaires to various European wireless carriers to determine if Apple’s distribution terms hinder its rivals from obtaining superior sales deals. According to the Times, carriers have until June 17 to send in the questionnaires.

“The Commission has information indicating that Apple and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have concluded distribution agreements which may potentially lead to the foreclosure of other Smartphone manufacturers from the markets,” the questionnaire reads.

“There are also indications that certain technical functions are disabled on certain Apple products in certain countries in the EU/EEA. If the existence of such behavior were to be confirmed, it might constitute an infringement of (anti-trust law).”

Sources told the Financial Times that the carriers are forced to accept stringent terms which hurts smaller carriers and other manufacturers. Apple, as a rule, puts quotas in place for how many iPhones its carriers must sell over a set timeframe.

Samsung Tops China Smartphone Market

Samsung remains the No. 1 Smartphone seller in China, moving 12.5 million devices in the first quarter of this year, new numbers from market research firm Strategy Analytics have shown.

This is the fifth quarter Samsung has led sales in China and is a 2.2 percent rise from the previous quarter.

Chinese Smartphone maker Huawei came in a distant second to Samsung, selling 8.1 million devices in the quarter. Lenovo was third with 7.9 million, China’s Coolpad sold seven million and ZTE 6.4 million. Apple, in sixth place, sold 6.1 million Smartphones in China.

According to Strategy Analytics, China is one of the key world’s Smartphone markets with approximately 32 percent of all global shipments.

Samsung’s success is due to an “efficient supply chain, sleek products, and crisp marketing,” said senior analyst Woody Oh.

When it comes to global Smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2013, Samsung took top honors dominating 30.8 percent of the market, while Apple placed second with 18.2 percent. LG took third with 4.8 percent, Huawei fourth with 4.4 percent and ZTE with 3.8 percent.

Samsung to Announce New Devices

Samsung, it appears, has more new devices up its sleeve.

The South Korean company has announced it will host a press conference in London June 20 at 7 p.m. that, seemingly, will unveil the next generations in its Galaxy and Ativ collections.

The announcement on the Samsung website is vague, but does feature close-up images of three different devices, leading to speculation that three new products will be launched.

The event is to be streamed live on the company’s mobile YouTube page.
