Tumblr Brings Sponsored Posts to Dashboard

|

Just a week-and-a-half after being acquired by Yahoo, Tumblr has announced in-stream advertising will begin to appear on users’ Dashboards.

“Today, we’ll start to bring sponsored posts to your Dashboard on the Web. Just like in our mobile apps, these posts will simply blend in with the posts from the blogs you follow,” the company said in a blog post.

The move is not a big surprise — Tumblr began to include advertising on its mobile apps in April, more than a month before being snapped up by Yahoo.

Much like the mobile sponsored posts, the ads on Tumblr’s Dashboard can be identified by a dollar sign icon.

The sponsored posts will be similar to the advertisements that appear on Facebook and Twitter.

Yahoo acquired the microblogging platform for $1.1 billion May 20. The deal is set to close in the second half of the year.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said Tumblr will continue to be independently operated in a bid not to “screw up” a good thing.

Mayer, at the time of the acquisition, said there are a number of areas on Tumblr — such as Dashboard — that would benefit from a “very light ad load.” She said selling ad space on popular blogs, if approved by the blog owner, is another option.
