Voice Mail on the Decline as Texting, Instant Chat Take Over

|

Voice mail appears to be the latest victim of technological efficiency. The popularity of texting, instant chat and transcription apps means more and more people are chucking the once prevalent telephone tool.

According to an article in USA TODAY, “the behavioral shift is occurring in tandem with the irreversible fading of voice calls in general, prompting more wireless carriers to offer unlimited voice minutes.”

Internet phone company Vonage told the publication the number of voice-mail messages left on user accounts had dropped eight percent in July from a year ago. Retrieved voice mail plummeted 14 percent among Vonage users in the same period.

Vonage has responded by offering a voice mail transcription service that alters voice messages to e-mail or text.

“The service also e-mails a direct link to the voice mail audio file, letting users bypass several steps to listen to it,” the article says.
