Passwords will be a thing of the past if Intel has its way.
A tablet with new software and a biometric sensor that recognizes the unique patterns of veins on a person’s palm, will replace the need for passwords, Intel researchers claim.
“The problem with passwords — we use too many of them, their rules are complex, and they differ for different websites,” Intel Labs director of security research Sridhar Iyengar was quoted by Reuters. “There is a way out of it, and biometrics is an option.”
Once the tablet recognizes a user, his or her identity is confirmed with banks, social networks and other services where the person has accounts, the Reuters article said.
Any device using the technology would have built-in “accelerometers to detect when a user puts it down, and would then log its owner off to keep unauthorized people from getting in,” the report said.
‘Leader’ of hacker group arrested
The self-proclaimed leader of computer hacker group Anonymous is in FBI custody.
Barrett Brown, 31, was arrested by Dallas police at 11 p.m. Sept. 12, Reuters reported.
“He was arrested and brought in for booking,” said Dallas County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Carmen Castro.
Castro said she didn’t know why Brown was arrested, adding there was no offense listed on the booking sheet. Brown was then turned over to the FBI.
A spokesman for the FBI declined to comment.
California law firm Leiderman Devine announced via Twitter, it would defend Brown at a hearing in Dallas federal court on Sept. 13. The post also indicated Brown had been detained on charges of “threatening a federal agent.”
Brown has been of interest to law enforcement officials for some time and was interviewed by the FBI in March, the Reuters report said.
Brown has been criticized by fellow members of Anonymous for using his real name and for being quoted as a representative of the group. Anonymous is known for having no clear leaders.
Google Adds the Bacon Number
It’s all about Bacon on Google these days.
Kevin Bacon that is.
Google, this year, has been adding cool and fun search operators such as “tilt,” “askew” and “do a barrel roll” to its queue of “Easter eggs.” Now there is the “Bacon number.”
It’s not about fattening pork products. It’s about Footloose and A Few Good Men actor Kevin Bacon, the most famous actor never to have been nominated for an Academy Award.
Google’s latest “Easter egg” allows all its users to play the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, a game long played by film buffs. Google has created a function to help users figure out how closely linked any film star is to Bacon, without users having to strain their brains.
To use it, type in the words Bacon number, followed by an actor’s or actress’ name. Google will come back with how closely he/she has been to Kevin Bacon.
The game came to be after Bacon made a statement in 1994 that he has worked with everyone in Hollywood, or knew someone who had worked with him or her.
Updated Facebbok App for Blackberry Users
RIM has updated its first party Facebook app. The 3.2 version boasts a new UI with a new navigation grid.
The update incorporates the Enhanced Birthday Feature, giving the user more control of how or if birthdays appear in his or her calendar.
Facebook Events, which allows users to organize gatherings, respond to invites, and keep up with what friends are doing, was also updated to allow users to view profiles of invited guests, chat about the event and RSVP.
