Amazon.com Inc., Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. and Nokia Corp. all plan announcements of new hand-held devices this week in a bid to undermine Smartphone giant Apple Inc., which will reveal its new iPhone next week.
The race commences Wednesday with Motorola presenting its Droid Razr phone at a New York event. Nokia will also unveil its newest offerings in the Big Apple Wednesday: the Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820.
Amazon is expected to introduce its new edition of the Kindle Fire tablet Thursday in Saint Monica, California.

* Motorola will showcase Verizon on its Droid Razr M 4G LTE, Motorola’s first major phone launch after being acquired by Google. News reports indicate the device will have a 8 megapixel camera; software navigation buttons for Android 4.0 and near field communication (NFC) functions. According to the rumor mill, the PC Advisor reports, the device may be a 4.3-inch qHD (960×540 pixel) Super AMOLED Advanced display with Gorilla Glass 2.
* Nokia is expected to roll out the first devices running Windows Phone 8, the latest mobile operating system from Microsoft Corp. This comes just one week after leaked images of the Lumia 920 hit the Internet.
The Lumia 920 will include wireless charging and an eight-megapixel camera, according to news reports. The phone will support wireless charging, according to technology blog The Verge. The site also reported that the handset would have a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a 4.5-inch HD display. The Lumia 820, reportedly with a 4.3-inch display, is also to be unveiled.
* Amazon is expected to launch an ad-integrated and, likely, cheaper version of its Kindle Fire tablet, possibly with a better display, camera, and also a body that is thinner and lighter.
* Aside from launching the new iPhone Sept. 12, Apple “plans to come-up with a mini seven-inch tablet, thus endangering other seven-inchers available on the market,” according to Mobilebloom. “The mini iPad is expected to have 40 percent more screen area than other similar alternatives and will be another benchmark to Apple’s production of quality products.”
