New YouTube Apps for iPhone and iPod Touch Arrive

|

YouTube has rolled out its new apps for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch as it gets ahead of iOS 6 where the app will not be native to the operating system as it was in previous iOS versions.

This is all part of the escalating ‘hostilities’ between Google and Apple as the companies move further away from any reliance on each other and set up camps which will leave the consumer to decide which side of the fence he/she is going to invest their money, time and effort.

The You Tube blog says

For all you diehard YouTube fans out there who can’t get enough YouTube on your mobile, we’ve got some great news: starting today, you can download the official YouTube app for iPhone and iPod touch from the App Store, bringing you more of the videos you love and more ways to share them with the people you care about.

The new app is built by YouTube engineers, to give our iPhone and iPod touch users the best mobile experience.

‘Built by Google for the best Google experience’. Sounds like the ‘Built by Apple for the only Apple experience’ approach the team in Cupertino swears by.

As for the functionality? Well, let’s just say that no matter what Google touts as the most important thing for its users the REAL most important thing is brought to light in this post from The Next Web

The app has ads, of course, as that was one of the things that Google could never do on the embedded YouTube app, which was made by Apple. I mentioned ads as the prime directive when iOS 6 was found to be gone from the latest beta and Google launched pre-roll ads for mobile a couple of weeks later. Those ads are now in the app.

So what about the iPad version? The You Tube blog assures us

We’re working on an optimized version of the YouTube app for iPad in the coming months, and stay tuned for more details.

What do you think of the battle lines that are being drawn between Google and Apple these days? is it good for the consumer? Is it good for these companies? What’s you take?
