Consumers set a record this summer.
More than 5.3 million mobile barcode scans were recorded in June, making it the highest scan month ever, according to a recent study by Scanbuy. In fact, there were more than 16 million mobile barcode scans in the second quarter of 2012, the study showed.
The study, summarized by Marketing Charts, and the ScanLife Trend Report, revealed half of the mobile scanners were 35 or older, a 22 per cent rise over the first quarter.
Those in the 35-44 age bracket have grown to a 24 percent share of all scans, up three percent from the first quarter. The 45-54 set and 55+ bracket also represent a growing proportion of barcode scanners, the study revealed. Scanners also tend to be male – 69 percent in Q2 and 68 percent in Q1.
The marketing campaigns to generate the most scans were contests, loyalty programs, social media, App downloads and videos. The industries that generated the most scans were toys, health and beauty, wireless, QSR, and beverage.
Coca-Cola, Doritos, Hunger Games, and Altoids were the most popular products scanned, the report revealed.
