With the imminent release of the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 looming Google is working to remind everyone of just how powerful Google Maps is. It will need to since it will no longer be powering the Maps app when Apple’s iOS 6 is finally rolled out next week with the iPhone 5 (at least that’s the rumor).
From the Google Lat Long blog we get
Maps keep our spirit of adventure alive by making it easier for us to explore the world around us. That’s why today, we’re making Google Maps even better with new turn-by-turn navigation with traffic conditions, biking directions, Map Maker and new Street View imagery in more locations globally. These improvements are part of our ongoing effort to build the best map we can — one that’s comprehensive, accurate and easy for you to use.
The latest announcements include expanded navigation in India, more biking directions for the folks in New Zealand (as well as Map Maker too) and there will be tours of 150 college campuses around the world.
Cool stuff. Google going to need to run hard. The maps and local aspect of Google’s mobile experience could be a huge differentiator from Apple’s map capabilities and a reason why someone may find an Android device more desirable than an iPhone. On the other hand, if Apple closes the gap quickly with their new map offering then it could put further distance between itself and the search giant.
It should be fun to watch. In the meantime watch this video that Google put together to show off what they one can do with their maps.
