Amazon.com Inc. unveiled a little fire Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012.
In direct challenge to Apple Inc.’s iPad, the online retailer launched a collection of Kindle tablets with the Kindle Fire HD taking center stage. The retailer is also offering a lighted e-reader called Paperwhite.
The Kindle Fire HD, fashioned to compete with iPad and other larger tablets, will be available for $299 – cheaper than many rivals’ devices. The new 8.9-inch display model – with 1,920 by 1,200 pixel resolution – will begin shipping Nov. 20. The seven-inch model, with 16 gigabytes of storage, will sell for $199 and will ship beginning Sept. 14.
The Paperwhite, an e-reader with backlit lighting throughout the display, has eight weeks of battery life. The $119 device will ship starting Oct. 1. The 3G-model, which allows downloading without a Wi-Fi connection, will cost $179.
The launch came a day after Nokia Corp. and Google Inc.’s Motorola Mobility division announced five new Smartphones between them.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 5 Sept. 12th.
