Google’s Marissa Mayer Jumps Ship to Yahoo…Brings Life Vest

|

According to reports, Google’s most prominent female executive just jumped ship and…wait for it…will become Yahoo’s new CEO!

Tomorrow!

Wowzas! Did anyone see that coming?

Reports are surfacing from credible sources, including the New York Times

Ms. Mayer resigned from Google on Monday afternoon by telephone. She starts at Yahoo on Tuesday. Ms. Mayer will also join Yahoo’s board.

In an interview, Ms. Mayer said she “had an amazing time at Google,” where she has worked for the past 13 years, but that ultimately “it was a reasonably easy decision” to take the top job at Yahoo. She said Yahoo is “one of the best brands on the Internet.”

Why in the world would Mayer leave her high profile position at Google? The quick answer? It wasn’t high profile enough. And, there were two good reasons why she would likely never become CEO of Google…Page & Brin. So, facing a ceiling that was more like concrete than glass, Mayer jumped ship.

And the ship she’s chosen to captain has certainly been on the brink of sinking. Run aground by Terry Semel, steered off course by Jerry Yang, headed for an iceberg under Carol Bartz, and briefly captained by non-captain Scott Thompson. Of course, Mayer has little to lose. She’s swimming in a boatload of Google shares and is well respected in many circles–Walmart made her a board member. Even if she fails, she’ll find herself right back at the point in her career where she is now–so long as she doesn’t turn Yahoo into a Titanic failure.

I’m rooting for her. I’ve not been this excited about the appointment of an ex-Googler to a CEO position since Tim Armstrong left to take over AOL. And that’s worked out fantas….good luck Marissa! ;-)

The last word goes to Peter Meyers…

Update: And, it’s official!
